Maia was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a genetic disease that destroys the nerves responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements such as sitting, standing, walking, head and neck control, eating and swallowing.
Maia will never be able to walk and she will need assistance with even the most simple day to day activities for the rest of her life.
There is currently no treatment or cure for SMA. But there is hope.
We are determined to give our daughter Maia the best quality of life that she can have, which can only be possible with the help of friends and family in our community. We are actively involved with the Families of SMA Greater Florida Chapter , a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a treatment or cure for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) through funding and advancing a comprehensive research program; supporting SMA families through networking, information and services; improving care for all SMA patients; educating health professionals and the public about SMA; enlisting government support for SMA; and embracing all touched by SMA in a caring community.
